His back was now facing the town. The autumn leaves were falling to the cold ground and his golden eyes fell on the gravestone. A chill ran down his spine, it wasn’t from the cold autumn wind, but the memories of what had happened only a few years before. To him it felt like another lifetime.

His head was spinning, memories of that day, the one that changed his life, kept coming up. He remembered it all so clearly: the circle, the door, the monster, the pain, the circle, the door, the monster the pain, the circle…

“Ed!” He came back to reality and turned to face his younger brother, Alphonse. At first glance you would not think Al was the younger of the two, his suit of armour body was too big for that. Edward looked at his brother and smiled, but it was a pained smile.

“Ed, what’s wrong?” His brother worried voice echoed in the silent graveyard. He stepped forward, crushing the fallen leaves.

“Uhhh…Nothing. Nothing is wrong Al.” He said smiling. “Lets get back, Auntie and Winry are probably wondering where we went.”

They walked in silence for the most part, but then Al had to know, “Ed why did you go off, to mom’s grave?” Ed looked up at his brother, but he looked away.

“I needed to know,” he said blankly not taking his eyes off the leaf covered ground. They kept walking in silence, but they did not realise that they were walking to their house, or where it used to be. When they arrived At the ruins of their house they both looked slightly surprised.

“I guess you needed to make sure eh Ed?” Alphonse looked at his brother who was now standing where the front door used to be.

“Yeah, and now I know…I will never look back.” His voice was getting stronger. “We will get our bodies back.” He looked down at his right arm made of automail. “We gave up so much, and in return created a monster.” He turned to look at his brother, eyes once again filled with determination.

Al looked at his brother and felt the same determination, though he couldn’t show it. “Ya,” he went over and stood beside Ed both of them knowing what the other was thinking.

A cold wing passed them and stirred up the leaves that were on the ruins of the burnt down house. Ed turned to face the wind and his pocket watch, the symbol that he was a national alchemist, fell off the chain and opened with the impact of the ground.

Ed just looked at it, a hot pain behind his eyes. A tear fell to the ground and he looked away, not wanting to read the message it contained. Never forget 3.Oct.11 The memories of that day flooded back to him: the house standing, then burning, then falling to the cold black ground. He picked up the pocket watch and snapped it shut. Once again he turned his back on the place he once called home, the place that monster was created, and walked away.

“Ed! Wait for me!” Al was running after him and they both went to Winry’s and auntie’s, leaves falling, like magic to the damp ground.

After dinner the boys went to their room. Al was sitting in a corner, his soul being in the suit of armour, he could not sleep. Ed usually got more than his fair share of sleeping though, but for some reason tonight he just couldn’t sleep. He lay awake in bed breathing softly, his chest rising and falling in a rhythmic pattern.

“Al?” Ed’s voice echoed in the dark. Al was startled by it, because usually Ed had been sleeping for an hour or so by now.

Al looked over at him, “Ya?” hoping to find out what was bothering his brother today.

Ed took a while to respond, Al wondered if he had fallen asleep. He finally answered his voice shaking, Al could tell he had been thinking a long time about what he was about to say. “Do you blame me? For what has happened?” He could see Ed’s face in the dark, the moon outlining every detail. His eyes were looking straight at the roof, and his expression was a serious one.

Al thought about this question, did he blame Ed for what had happened? Did he think Ed was the cause of the way he was now?

“No Ed,” he said in the darkness. “I don’t blame you. It was our decision, not just yours; I knew what I was getting myself into. You sacrificed you right arm for me, of course I don’t blame you.” Ed looked over at him and he could tell Al meant what he had just said.

Ed’s voice came again, soft and silent. “Thanks Al,” Al could see he was smiling in the dark. Ed rolled over and fell asleep, his biggest fear out of the way. Al turned and looked out the window to the colour-filled trees, and the chilling wind. Finally the third day of October had now ended, and the haunting memories of the same day years before would fade just a little more.
